Cast of ‘Jungle Cruise’ Discuss Bringing Disneyland Ride to the Screen

Inspired by the famous Disneyland theme park ride, Disney's "Jungle Cruise" is an adventure-filled, rollicking thrill-ride down the Amazon with wisecracking skipper Frank Wolff (Dwayne Johnson) and intrepid researcher Dr. Lily Houghton (Emily Blunt).

Entertainment Affair recently joined Johnson and Blunt along with co-stars Edgar Ramírez and Jack Whitehall, for a virtual press conference to discuss the film. Check out a few highlights of the event below.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson was attached to the project early on thanks to the script and the potential it had. “Well, the script was in a really good place, and I immediately just saw the potential of the opportunity,” Johnson said. “And that opportunity was to take a beloved and iconic Disney ride, since 1955 when the park opened. This was Walt Disney’s baby, and there were a lot of elements that I felt comfortable with saying, ‘Yes, I will come on board, I’ll partner with you guys.”

Emily Blunt rode the classic Jungle Cruise boat ride for the first time with co-star Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson during the world premiere of the new movie at Disneyland. “I only rode the Jungle Cruise ride two days ago at the premiere for the first time…I loved it. I thought it was very whimsical and sweet, and I could see the elements from the ride that made it into the film.”

The film also includes an openly queer character. Jack Whitehall, who plays Lily's brother McGregor Houghton, shares that he’s gay in a scene. “I think what’s so great about this movie is that all of the characters feel so fleshed out, and all of them have, you know, interesting backstories and are fully realized. You know, in a lot of movies of this kind of genre sometimes, you’d have characters that are a little bit kinda two dimensional,” he said.

Edgar Ramirez plays the villainous Spanish conquistador Aguirre. The Venezuelan actor talked about the supernatural look of his character and his fear of snakes. “I was very happy that those snakes weren’t anywhere near me during the shoot,” Ramirez said. “I mean, ’cause I’m super-afraid of snakes, and we encountered some of them when we’re shooting in Atlanta. We shot in real locations and we dressed them to look like the Amazon. It’s incredible. I come from an Amazonian country, and I saw the movie for the first time two days ago at the premiere.”
