“The Boy From Medellín”: Delving Into the Up Close and Personal Life of J Balvin

J Balvin’s highly anticipated documentary, The Boy From Medellín, premiered on May 7th on Amazon Prime Video; coincidentally, J Balvin’s birthday.

From Academy Award®-nominee and Emmy-winning filmmaker Matthew Heineman (Cartel Land, City of Ghosts, A Private War) comes an astonishingly intimate portrait of one of the biggest international music superstars of our time. The Boy From Medellín follows J Balvin as he prepares for the most important concert of his career-a sold-out stadium show in his hometown of Medellín, Colombia. But as the performance draws ever closer, the streets explode with growing political unrest, forcing the Latin Grammy-winning musician to wrestle with his responsibility as an artist to his country and his legions of fans around the globe. As the public pressure of the approaching concert heightens, behind the scenes Balvin also continues to deal with the anxiety and depression that has plagued him for years. Shot entirely in the dramatic week leading up to the concert, The Boy From Medellín gives us unprecedented access to "Reggaeton's Global Ambassador," and provides an immersive look into one of the most pivotal and emotionally charged moments of his life.

Prior to the premiere of the documentary, Entertainment Affair was a part of the press conference el parcero gave himself to share more of an insight about the film.

In it, we learned that mental illness is something J Balvin has dealt with for years. It was in fact a big part of this documentary. The artist mentioned wanting to shed a light on it so people know he is just like everyone else, and that depression and anxiety isn't something to be ashamed of.

The documentary let’s us delve into the personal life of J Balvin and how he grapples with fame when it comes to speaking up on controversial/political issues as well as how he struggles with depression and anxiety. The most important takeaway is that he doesn't let any of this stop him and continues to make Latinos all over the world proud, especially in Medellín, Colombia. Because he proves he really is The Boy From Medellín.
