“Hamilton” Cast Talks Bringing the Broadway Phenomenon to Disney+
Filmed at The Richard Rodgers Theatre in Broadway on June of 2016, the film transports its audience into the world of the Broadway show in a uniquely intimate way. With book, music, and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda and direction by Thomas Kail, "Hamilton" is inspired by the book "Alexander Hamilton" by Ron Chernow and produced by Thomas Kail, Lin-Manuel Miranda and Jeffrey Seller, with Sander Jacobs and Jill Furman serving as executive producers.
Entertainment Affair recently joined the cast of “Hamilton” comprised of Lin-Manuel Miranda, Thomas Kail, Alex Lacamoire, Daveed Diggs, Renee Elise Goldsberry, Christopher Jackson, Jasmine Cephas Jones, Leslie Odom Jr., Okieriete Onaodowan, and Phillipa Soo on a special virtual press conference to talk about the long awaited premiere.
The film was slated to premiere next year in theaters, but Lin-Manuel explained that one of the reasons behind the change in timeline was due in a sense to the current climate, “...now in this moment where there is no theater, we have the gift of this show and the snapshot of this moment and I’m really grateful for that”.
Between reliving moments of the filming as well as their time on the Broadway Musical, the cast all agreed on the fact that they really wanted children to be able to watch this musical as well as experience it, but the accessibility to the musical was limited, so being able to premiere it on a format that is now available to everyone brings them joy. Lin-Manuel added, “...the issue of accessibility. It was a challenge. It continues to be a challenge to get folks into the theater when we serve it to 13 hundred people at a time at the Rogers. And so, we really, worked hard to be able to document this incredible company before it started changing, before that first year contract ran out, and we got it done the week before we began to leave”.
Jasmine Cephas Jones noted this is particularly special to her because, “there’s so many avenues and crossroads that the show does to open people’s minds, and I’m also excited for the youth. There’s so much that is happening in the world right now and there’s a lot of feelings that I feel like a lot of children can’t even understand what’s going on. And seeing this beautifully written piece of art with this awesome cast can inspire a lot of children. And be comforting, as well and an inspiration to write, to think, to vote, to start a revolution with their friends. I mean, this is a piece of art that is a beautiful thing and I’m proud for everyone to see it”.
The musical is highly acclaimed in the USA but now that it will premiere on Disney+, the potential audience grows to an international scale, and one of the questions brought up during the press conference was how the story will remain relevant for an international audience. “Hopefully in the same way that Les Miserable was written in French is relevant for an international audience. Revolution is universal. The story of what you do with the life you’re given is, hopefully, universal...the hope is that we’ve told a story with enough specificity, that it resonates beyond its country of origin,” Lin-Manuel stated.
An unforgettable cinematic stage performance, the filmed version of the original Broadway production of "Hamilton" combines the best elements of live theater, film and streaming to bring the cultural phenomenon to homes around the world for a thrilling, once-in-a-lifetime experience. "Hamilton" is the story of America then, told by America now. Featuring a score that blends hip-hop, jazz, R&B and Broadway, "Hamilton" has taken the story of American founding father Alexander Hamilton and created a revolutionary moment in theatre—a musical that has had a profound impact on culture, politics, and education.
“Hamilton” premieres globally and exclusively on Disney+ July 3rd and it is not to be missed.
