Press Conference: Disney and Pixar’s ‘Onward’ takes us on a magical quest

by Becky García | March 5, 2020

Set in a suburban fantasy world, Disney and Pixar’s “Onward” introduces two teenage elf brothers, Ian and Barley. Together, they embark on an extraordinary quest to discover if there is still a little magic left out there in order to spend one last day with their father, who died when they were too young to remember him. The film’s cast includes iconic actors like Tom Holland, Chris Pratt, Octavia Spencer, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

Entertainment Affair recently attended the screening and press junket for the upcoming film which included Chris Pratt and Tom Holland, as well as director Dan Scanlan and producer Kori Rae.

During the press conference, director Dan Scanlan shared how “Onward” is a deeply personal film because the story is inspired by his own relationship with his brother and their connection with their dad who passed away when he was about a year old. He mentioned how his dad had always been a mystery to them; a family member had sent them a tape recording of their dad saying just two words: ‘hello’ and ‘goodbye,’ and those two words were magic to him and his brother.

In the film, Ian uses his magic to spend a few more minutes with his dad with the help of his brother Barley, who contrary to what we usually see in other films, were not jealous of each other, but rather worked together to make it happen. This was a situation Chris deeply connected with as he went on to explain that his brother was the one originally interested in acting; career choice he later never pursued but Chris did, yet his brother was never jealous of him, but rather supported him 100%.

Disney and Pixar's "Onward" takes us on a magical quest, with obstacles along the way, to meet and spend those last few minutes with Ian and Barley’s dad before the sun sets. But, will we get to see him? Will Ian and Barley get to spend those last few minutes with him and ask him all they’ve ever wanted to? Head to the theaters this weekend to find out and be ready to laugh but also cry as their journey soon becomes your journey as well. “Onward” hits theaters March 6.
