‘Sonic The Hedgehog’ Director Talks Backlash to Original Design

Sonic the Hedgehog is an action-adventure movie about the iconic Sega video game character, Sonic, which is voiced by Ben Schwartz. Sonic is an "alien" kind of being who's running away from Dr. Ivo Robotnik played by Jim Carrey, who wants to steal his supersonic speed powers to take over the world. Sonic, with the help of local cop Tom "Donut Lord" Wachowski played by James Marsden, tries to evade Robotnik, and while doing so getting into plenty of trouble along the way. It is a charming story about friendship with exciting and elaborate slow-motion sequences. Jim Carrey's hyperbolic and cartoonish character was the perfect nemesis against a cartoon-like animated Sonic. Definitely a cute movie to enjoy with the kids.

At a recent press junket, director Jeff Fowler spoke about the backlash received on the first Sonic character design that was released in the first trailer of the movie. The fans were livid on the scary-looking Sonic and Paramount Pictures listened and went on to redesign the character even if it meant delaying the release of the movie a couple of months. The redesign was more in tune with the Sonic we grew up with and much more lovable.

While talking about his passion for the Sonic movie and the redesign that happened, director Jeff Fowler was playfully interrupted by Jim Carrey with and then people online said 'no, we don't like it'. Go back and try again. Fowler explained, “It was just, 'Message received.' You gotta respect the fans, I mean, they're the reason we had the opportunity to make this movie. They've loved Sonic for 30 years. You gotta listen to that. We were so excited about the story, had so much fun making the movie, and we really wanted the audience and core fans to be on board in a big way, and if that meant going back to the drawing board with Sonic, then we were happy to do it. And we could not be more excited about where we landed.” And we are glad that they respected the fans' wishes and went with a more faithful look of the original Sonic.

Sonic the Hedgehog races into theatres February 14.
