Press Conference: ‘Gemini Man’ is an innovative action-thriller starring Will Smith

Entertainment Affair recently had a chance to screen Gemini Man which stars Will Smith as himself as well as a younger version of himself...or so we thought. In the film, Smith plays the older elite assassin Henry, while being chased by Junior who was sent to eliminate him. We soon learn Junior is a clone of Henry and that’s where the plot thickens.

While watching the movie, the question of how they accomplished what we were watching on the screen always lingered. A few days later, during a press conference we attended, would answer our questions.

Will Smith accompanied by Clive Owen, director Ang Lee, producer Jerry Bruckheimer, visual effects supervisor Bill Westenhofer, and Weta visual effects supervisor Guy Williams were part of the press conference. One of the surprising revelations during it was that the idea behind this movie had already been completed, but they needed technology to catch up with the creativity of the writer. Hence, why the perfect moment was now. Jerry Bruckheimer mentioned that the film had been in the works for 10 years. A great example of how human creativity sometimes surpasses technology.

The technology in this film is amazing and really like nothing else we’ve ever seen with ground-breaking visual effects. Junior is so completely life-like that it was hard to believe that it wasn’t actually Smith portraying him, it actually wasn’t even a real person. Important to note, and something that was mentioned several times during the conference was that Junior is not a de-aged version of Will Smith, but rather a 100% digital human. The fact that this was even possible is mind blowing. You watch the film and really do feel like there are two persons in the screen in front of you, when in reality, the second is a digital human.

Even though Junior is a 100% digital human, Will Smith was definitely involved in the performance of the character. It is 100% Smith’s performance on a digital full body human. In order to do that, he had to wear a head rig which captured his movements; which means Smith actually did portray both characters, just not physically.

Not only does that make the film stand out, but the film was shot at 120 frames per second (vs the traditional 24 frames per second) and in very high-definition 4K 3D. Another surprising fact? No theater can actually play it in its original format; some will only be able to play it in 120 fps 2K 3D, which is the closest we’ll be able to watch it to its original format. Yes, that means this film will require 3D glasses. Something to keep in mind if you tend to get dizzy with 3D films. When asked why the film was done this way, the response was simple: To give the audience a new experience when watching the film, and to get them to go to a movie theater and watch it. In other words, make it worth a trip to a movie theater.

Was it worth the trip to the theater? We’d say it was; definitely a very different experience that you must experience at least once, and Gemini Man is the one to do so with.

Gemini Man his theaters October 11.
