Bicoastal Bombazo Celebrates Puerto Rican Community in Los Angeles
On Thursday, September 27 Flowers RDM along with Taller Kurubina welcome the Afro Puerto Rican bomba collective from the Bronx, New York, Redobles de Cultura. For the first time at Los Globos, just 5 minutes east of the heart of Downtown LA and on iconic Sunset Blvd, attendees will experience Puerto Rican heritage and culture.
Bicoastal Bombazo aims to bring together the current Puerto Rican diaspora of New York and California. All cultures are invited to join and participate. This night will be surely contagious from east coast to west coast with the spirit of unity for the island of Puerto Rico, which is still rebuilding from the effects of Hurricane Maria. Washington D.C. based Friends of Puerto Rico will be taking monetary donations for their efforts to promote sustainability post- hurricane.
Bomba is the blend of the three different cultures that shape the DNA of the island: the West African, Spanish and Taino cultures. The essence of this genre is the encounter between dance, the drum and voice. Bomba is a communal activity that still thrives in its traditional centers of Loíza, Santurce, Mayagüez, Ponce, and New York City, recently making waves in Los Angeles.
As part of Bicoastal Bombazo week, Taller Kurubina will host a Bomba Master Class at Live Arts in Eagle Rock on September 26th where those interested can learn and practice the craft.
