The Super Hero Dream Team is Back in Marvel’s “Avengers: Age of Ultron”
Marvel’s “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” the epic sequel to the biggest Super Hero movie of all time, is here and promises to be this year’s Summer superstar. When Tony Stark tries to jumpstart a dormant peacekeeping program, things don’t go as planned, and Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, The Incredible Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye, are put to the ultimate test as the fate of the planet and humanity is in their hands. Joining the original Avengers are Vision, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, in a story that also looks deeper into the characters individual lives outside of their work as an Avenger.
The powerhouse cast lead by Robert Downey, Jr. includes Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Cobie Smulders, Paul Bettany, and James Spader, among others.
At a recent press conference, the cast was joined by writer and director Joss Whedon, and producer Kevin Feige, to talk about the film, its characters and the process of putting this dysfunctional team together and making it look good. “There are 47 of these people [pointing at the cast]. I really didn’t think that through very much, at all. [Laughs] It’s just making sure that everybody has got their moment and has their own throughline, and it’s connected to the movie. It’s making sure that they’re all within the same narrative structure, and that they’re in the same movie, and that it’s all connected to the main theme. It’s all about making these people look good, which takes a long time,” said Whedon when asked about the biggest challenge when putting the story together and then shooting the film.
Creating the sequel to one of the greatest, largest, and most successful movies of all time is no small feat. So how do you start? “With the smallest thing I could think of,” said Whedon. “The thing that drew me back to the movie was what little moments are there to see with these characters that I haven’t gotten to do yet? It’s never the big picture stuff. It’s always just... Where do they live? How can I get inside their hearts? What’s funny about them? There those moments that I write reams and reams of paper on, just thinking about the tiniest part. That’s the heart of the thing.”
Downey, Jr. only wanted to make one thing clear: “the next time I’m not asked the first question, I’ll fucking walk out!” As expected the room erupted in laughter. “Joss really created some great new situations for Tony to be in. So rather than digging my heels and trying to rewrite every scene, to make them even better, I just showed up, and it turned out great,” Downey, Jr. added referring to the fatherly side of Tony Stark in this film.
This time around we get to see a bigger emphasis on Hawkeye, and for Renner that is music to his ears. “I speak in this movie, which is awesome. I got to dive into some really killer aspects. I understood Hawkeye, in the sense that he’s human with a higher skill set, so I could tap into that. I feel like I got to explore a little bit more of that, and even outside of the skill set. I thought that was a really, really endearing and thoughtful secret that he had,” he said.
And to balance out all of the testosterone of the Avengers is Johansson, who returns as Black Widow. We get to see a new side of her were she “lets her guard down” and accepts “the call of duty.” The normal challenges of shooting this kind of film were magnified by the fact that Johansson was very pregnant during the shoot. “I’m very fortunate that there’s a team around me that is super supportive in helping all of Widow’s fight moves and bad-ass motorcycle riding happen. I could not do that without them. Starting a move and finishing a move, all of that work be seamless, takes a lot of choreography and team spirit. Every film is exciting because I get new tools and fun new stuff to do, and luckily Joss [Whedon] writes me some bad-ass moves that makes me look epic and it’s awesome. I just said epic, awesome, and bad-ass, all in one sentence,” she said.
Feige couldnt have said it better, “this is the greatest ensemble ever assembled in cinematic history.” Don’t miss it!
