Floyd Norman, Lisa Davis and Mimi Gibson talk Disney’s ‘101 Dalmatians’
It’s been 54 years since one of the most memorable animated films debuted. Today this feature continues to captivate new generations and audiences everywhere. For the first time on Digital HD, Blu-ray comes Disney’s 101 Dalmations Diamond Edition. Entertainment Affair caught up with animator Floyd Norman, Mimi Gibson (voice of Lucky), and Lisa Davis (voice of Anita). They share their most memorable moments, including stories with the man who started it all Walt Disney.
Admitting he was all about quality, Floyd Norman shared his thoughts on Walt Disney, “He was an exceptional leader. He was a visionary. He was just an amazing man and yet he was a gentleman. He was a Midwesterner, a simple farm boy who was also a genius… I was probably a little bit intimidated by him. After all, his name was Walt Disney. He ran the studio. He was my boss. But you know what? He wasn’t really that scary. He was really a good guy.” Davis, who agrees that it was perfection that was demanded of Disney, said she wasn’t scared of him but knew many people were, “I wasn’t scared of him at all ‘cause I know some people were. Some people were. They use to say as they did in Bambi, they would say, ‘the man is in the forest.’ They use to say, ‘man is in the studio.’”
Based on the original book written by Dodie Smith, 101 Dalmatians tells the story of two Dalmatians (Pongo and Perdita) and their two human pets, Roger and Anita. The two are off to face one of the most unforgettable villains in animation history. Cruella De Vil dognaps all the Dalmatian puppies in London, but with some help from brave animal heroes all the puppies are saved and Roger and Anita end up with 101 Dalmatians.
Mimi Gibson, who was eleven at the time, admits that if she had a do over she would play Lucky all over again. “Lucky was the star,” she said. Gibson also explained that she voiced all the puppies along with a group of colleagues. “They would just take us one at a time to do all the puppy voices so we all did all the puppy voices… I didn’t know who I was in the movie until the movie came out.” For both Mimi and Lisa, the film was quite the experience. Still today they agree 101 Dalmatians was one of their best experiences. They remain fans of the film. “It was and is the most wonderful job I ever had and I’m terribly proud of it and this new Blu-ray version is beautiful,” said Davis.
This new Diamond Edition features new bonus material of a scene that was left incomplete. “There was a segment in Walt Disney’s 101 Dalmatians that was never completed. It’s when the puppies were watching the TV show. Well they never completed that little sequence where you find out what happens to Thunderbolt: The Wonder Dog. It was never completed… They asked me if I’d be willing to write and storyboard that sequence to wrap it up and then we would animate it and finish what had not been finished in 1960. We wrapped up in 2014 so hat was pretty amazing because I worked on Dalmatians and we finished the film in the summer of 1960. I was able to revisit that same film last year and finish. What was left undone was finally completed last year and we did it the old fashion way. We animated it pencil and paper the same way we would’ve done it back in 1960 - Disney old school hand drawn traditional animation. So that was kinda special,” said Norman.
This edition also includes: Walt Disney Presents “The Best Doggoned Dog in the World”, Lucky Dogs, DisneyView, Dalmations 101: Hosted by Cameron Boys (Disney Channel’s “The Descendants”), plus a selection of classic bonus features. All of this for the first time in a combo pack on Digital HD, Blu-ray. Get your copy today and enjoy the history of Walt Disney and a fun filled beloved adventure for the entire family.
