"The American Music Awards" Features Some of The Latin World’s Biggest Stars
With Pitbull hosting the show this year and superstars Marc Anthony, Prince Royce, Daisy Fuentes, Naya Rivera, Zoe Saldana, Christina Aguilera performing or presenting, Latinos were in the house in a huge way at last night’s American Music Awards, on ABC. Marc Anthony won "Favorite Artist - Latin", a category that was created 15 years ago.
One of the most exciting moments of the show was superstar Jennifer Lopez’s thrilling tribute to 'The Queen of Salsa', Celia Cruz, the most popular salsa artist of the 20th Century. In wild and colorful costumes that would have pleased 'La Guarachera' de Cuba, Lopez's scorching performance included 30 dancers, wild choreography and Cruz’s signature songs, Quimbara, La Vida Es Un Carnaval, Bemba Colora.
Omer Pardillo Cid, executor of the Celia Cruz Estate said, “I am very grateful to Jennifer Lopez for her spectacular tribute to Celia on the American Music Awards. The great Cuban poet Jose Marti said ‘It is honorable to honor someone else’ and in this, the tenth year anniversary of Celia's passing, I can think of no better way to keep her musical legacy alive for new generations than through tributes such as this by one of today's brightest stars.”
Artists were honored in the genres of Pop/Rock, Country, Rap/Hip-Hop, Soul/R&B, Alternative Rock, Adult Contemporary, Latin, Contemporary Inspirational, Electronic Dance Music, as well as categories for Top Soundtrack, New Artist of the Year Presented by Kohl’s, Artist of the Year, and for the first year-ever, Single of the Year.
This year marks the 15th anniversary of the "Favorite Artist - Latin" category which has recognized the most prominent Latin artists of recent decades, including Julio Iglesias who was the first Latin artist to receive an American Music Award. After 15 years the Latino impact is reflected even more with artists of Hispanic descent such as: Favorite Male Soul R&B Nominee Miguel is half Mexican; 3 time nominee Bruno Mars is one quarter Puerto Rican; and of course, artists within the "Favorite Artist - Latin" category, Romeo Santos, Prince Royce and Marc Anthony, reflect, the wide range of music loved by fans in the U.S.
