Walt Disney Studios Takes Fans Behind the Scenes at Disney’s D23 Expo
The D23 Expo - The Ultimate Disney Fan Event - brings the entire world of Disney under one roof, providing attendees with unprecedented access to Disney films, television and theme parks. Think of it as Disney's version of Comic-Con. The name “D23” pays homage to the exciting journey that began in 1923 when Walt Disney opened his fledgling studio in Hollywood.
The event took place over the weekend and Entertainment Affair was there last Saturday, August 10, when the studio showcased its exciting live-action release slate. Among the 11 films promoted were Disney’s Saving Mr. Banks and Maleficent, Marvel’s Thor: The Dark World and Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Check out some of the highlights below.
Angelina Jolie made a surprise appearance to promote Maleficent, which tells the story of Sleeping Beauty from the point of view of the terrifying character Disney created for the original animated version. “Since I was a little girl, Maleficent was always my favorite,” Jolie told the crowd.
Sir Anthony Hopkins, Tom Hiddleston and Natalie Portman from Marvel's Thor: The Dark World, as well as Chris Evans, Sebastian Stan and Anthony Mackie from Captain America: The Winter Solder, joined Marvel Studios President and Producer Kevin Feige on stage.
B.J. Novak and Jason Schwartzman play Robert and Richard Sherman, respectively, the Academy Award-winning songwriters behind Mary Poppin's unforgettable songs, in the upcoming Saving Mr. Banks. The two actors performed "Let's Go Fly A Kite" from Mary Poppins onstage. After the show, B.J. and Jason discussed what it was like portraying the two iconic Disney Legends in Music onscreen.
Star Wars: Episode VII updates were missing from the presentation. “I really wish I could tell you more. It will come soon,” Disney chairman Alan Horn said.
Disney has announced that it will host its fourth D23 Expo from the Anaheim Convention Center in 2015.
