Interview with 'We're the Millers' Star Luis Guzmán

by Lydia Aquino | August 7, 2013

Warner Bros. Pictures World Premiere of "WE'RE THE MILLERS"

There are some super stars that you see every day in the tabloids, read about their lives and every move they make, and there are successful actors you feel you know them every time you see them on the screen… like Luis Guzmán.  Born in Puerto Rico and raised in New York City, he has more than 70 film credits under his belt and has worked with the most respectable talent in Hollywood like directors Steven Soderbergh and Paul Thomas Anderson and actors like Dustin Hoffman and Al Pacino.

In his recent film, We’re the Millers, Guzmán plays a Mexican cop patrolling the border when he stops the Millers. In the film, David, played by Jason Sudeikis, must become a drug smuggler by bringing a shipment in from Mexico. Twisting the arms of his neighbors, cynical stripper Rose, played by recently engaged actress Jennifer Aniston, and wannabe customer Kenny (Will Poulter), and the tatted-and-pierced streetwise teen Casey (Emma Roberts), he devises a foolproof plan. One fake wife, two pretend kids and a huge, shiny RV later, the Millers are headed south of the border for a Fourth of July weekend.

“I was in the supermarket and I got kidnapped, I woke up and I was dressed like Mexican cop,” he says jokingly about how he got involved with the movie.  “No. Really, I got a call from producer Chris Bender. The scenes were very funny and I decided to do it.”

Storylines and scripts are the only reason Guzmán chooses his roles. “If the script is good and the story is good, I’ll work with any director.” And that’s why he never chooses between comedic characters or dramatic roles, “Both come naturally to me. If the story is right. I’ll do it,” he says.

Guzmán is aware of the achievements of the Latin community in the past years, and has seen changes in how Latinos are portrayed in Hollywood.  “The changes come because the roles of Latinos in society have changed.  Now you see Latin nurses, lawyers, doctors, many professionals. Hollywood has to adapt and tell their stories.”

Even though his filmography is impressive, there are still many actors he wants to work with.  “I would like to work with Javier Bardem.  He’s done incredible things.  I would also like to work with young talent like Gabrielle Union.” If the story is right, everything is possible.

We’re The Millers opens nationwide on August 7, 2013.
