Mexican Pop Group REIK Bring "Peligro" Tour to California
Reik, the Mexican trio from Baja California, has been successful in the music industry since they launched their first single “Yo quisiera” in 2005. Their first album, Reik went platinum in Mexico and since then their music has been playing heavily in hispanic radio stations all over Latin America and the States. After their first hit album Reik, they have released Secuencia (2006), Un día Más (2008) and Peligro (2011) establishing themselves as one of the top latin music acts.
Their latest album Peligro has garnered great reviews from critics and massive success in both Latin America and the U.S. Now they are touring the States with the Peligro Tour and the next stop is Anaheim, CA for one show only on May 9th.
We caught up with Gilberto Marin, better known as Bibi the electric guitarist, to ask him more about the concert.
Entertainment Affair: When did you decide to become a musician?
Bibi: I started playing the guitar when I was 11 years old. I began making money as a guitarist when I became 18. It was always a dream of mine to make a living off music, but I never thought it would be a reality until I became a member of Reik at 21.
EA: Why did you choose the guitar?
Bibi: It was natural for me. I never thought about it. It just happened. I had a guitar at home because of my family. It was very accessible
EA: The ballads in you repertoire seem to be the most popular ones. What do you think this genre offers that other music rhythms do not?
Bibi: We are not a ballad group, but that’s what people prefer. Latin Americans prefer the pop ballads, but we have a lot of pop in our albums like the song “Peligro” that is a huge hit. The ballads just work for us.
EA: Why do you think Reik is so successful?
Bibi: It’s a mix of things, but at the end of the day, the songs connect with the audience. That’s why we’ve been successful since our first single was released. Maybe we became successful too soon, but we've worked very hard since then. It is very difficult to maintain that level of success.
EA: What can fans expect form the concert?
Bibi: A dynamic show. “Peligro” has been our most popular tour and the biggest one in terms of production. We are going to play music from our four albums. We’ve been touring for the past 2 years.
EA: Is Reik ready to sing in English and do a crossover?
Bibi: I would like that at some point. It broadens our music and it opens our doors to new ears.
EA: Do you have a ritual before going on stage?
Bibi: No! I am not superstitious at all.
See Reik in concert Thursday, May 9 at the City National Grove of Anaheim.
