As the tagline says, "evil wears many faces," in this case the face of evil is the horrific, yet familiar Leatherface, and he is back with a vengeance. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise has a new addition, featuring the iconic killer, packing not only his chainsaw, but also some serious 3D action. The story departs from the macabre ending of the Tobe Hooper’s 1974 horror classic.

Texas Chainsaw 3D begins when the blood-thirsty Sawyer clan is confronted for the brutal murders they have committed. The incident becomes fatal for the Sawyer family, which is ambushed by an angry mob. From the riot, little baby girl Heather is left as the only survivor and later adopted by a couple that participated in the lynching. Years later that little baby, now a woman, gets news that reveal her true identity. Heather is notified of an inheritance in Texas from a grandmother she has never met. Accompanied by her boyfriend and friends, she embarks on a journey filled with gruesome surprises. Soon enough she will find out the implications of being a Sawyer.

On this occasion, Leatherface is portrayed by actor Dan Yeagen, who met director John Luessenhop at a social event. His large physique and contemplative demeanor caught Luessenhop's attention, who immediately knew he had just found the actor he needed for his project “I think I am looking at Leatherface,” he told the person next to him. About the film, Yeagen says, “I think this movie is more about Leatherface.” He also explains that to develop his character he carefully studied the work of Gunnar Hansen as the original Leatherface. “I wanted that the audience that have seen the original would say ‘that is the same man’.  The only difference is that now he is more independent,” said Yeagen. He expressed the challenges he faced as an actor handling a chainsaw and running around with it while wearing a mask.

The rest of the cast is formed by young and fresh faces, led by Alexandra Daddario (Percy Jackson & the Olympians) as Heather Sawyer. Ryan, Heather’s boyfriend is portrayed by the R&B artist Trey Songz. Tania Raymonde (LOST), Scott Eastwood (Trouble with the Curve), Keram Malicki-Sanchez and Shaun Sipos join this horrid trip to the darkest and bloodiest part of Texas. Also there are cameos by Gunnar Hansen, John Dugan and Marilyn Burns, part of the original film cast. In this way Texas Chainsaw 3D pays tribute to the film that originated this cult franchise and set the standard for slasher films everywhere.

One of the main characteristics of the 1974 Texas Chainsaw Massacre is the realism with which the images of the film are treated. With that realistic imagery in mind, the production team made the decision to shoot this film in 3D. Although the script was written to take full advantage of the 3D factor of the film, the purpose behind it was to create a whole experience instead of just having a few shocking moments. “For me the 3D was to create a world you could watch, exist in, explore the frame and participate without having to duck and crawl and worry about the things being thrown at you the whole movie,” said Luessenhop.

Although Texas Chainsaw 3D has all the traditional elements of a horror film, it certainly takes a lot of chances and puts a twist on things. The new member of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre family goes out of its way to pay homage to the film that originated this series of films, comics and a video game. This new movie celebrates almost 40 years of this gory myth that resurfaces to scare hardcore fans, new audiences and everyone in between.

Evil is always right round the corner in Texas Chainsaw 3D, NOW PLAYING in theaters!
