Donations Benefit the Hispanic Federation and Victims of Hurricane Sandy as well as the Children’s Home Society

Univision Radio, the radio arm of Univision Communications Inc., the leading media company serving Hispanic America, held the New York and Miami Annual Celebrity Basketball Tournaments on December 12 and December 13, respectively. Latin urban duo Wisin & Yandel headlined both basketball tournaments and were accompanied by other celebrities including Henry Santos, season three winner of Univision’s popular dance competition “¡Mira Quien Baila!” (Look Who’s Dancing!), Jessy Terrero and former Miami HEAT point guard Carlos Arroyo.

Playing against local New York and Miami Univision Radio personalities, these celebrities played for Univision Radio listeners. Donations from the New York Annual Celebrity Basketball Tournament benefited victims of Hurricane Sandy by way of The Hispanic Federation, a non-profit organization that provides grants to a broad network of Latino non-profit agencies serving the most vulnerable members of the Hispanic community. Donations from the Miami Annual Celebrity Basketball Tournament benefited The Children’s Home Society, a non-profit organization that provides services to create healthy children and strong families.

Announcing New York’s Annual Celebrity Basketball Tournament were Carlos Molina “Huebin” and Luis Vega from “The Luis Jimenez Show.” Univision Radio’s DJ Crème, Psycho, El Padrino, DJ Bacan Bacan, and Speedy from “The Luis Jimenez Show” participated in the tournament held at Hostos Community College in the Bronx, NY. Singer Ely kicked off the evening singing her rendition of the national anthem. The New York Nets cheerleading squad and DJ J Perez entertained crowds during halftime. Puerto Rican basketball player Carlos Arroyo also participated in the tournament. He was a member of the Puerto Rican National Basketball Team that defeated the United States during the 2004 Olympic Basketball Tournament and is considered one of the premier international point guards.  “The Luis Jimenez Show’s” very own Alma presented a $10,000 special donation to the Hispanic Federation in honor of those families affected by Hurricane Sandy. Miss Dominican Republic USA Chantel Martinez presented a check for $5,000 on behalf of Post Honey Bunches of Oats and McDonalds donated $1,000 for the cause.

Jose Paneda, Univision Radio commentator of the Miami HEAT was the official announcer of Miami’s Annual Celebrity Basketball Tournament. On-air personalities Enrique Santos, DJ Xtreme and Lazaro Lorenzo played against celebrities during the tournament at Bucky Dent Park in Hialeah, FL. Julia Dale inaugurated the evening with a special rendition of the national anthem. A surprise performance during halftime period featured HEAT Mascot Burnie and cheerleaders from Miami Dade College as well as the elite cheerleading team of the City of Hialeah. Mix 98.3’s Luisa Fernanda and Giselle Andres served as special cheerleaders for the station’s team.

All teams who participated in each Annual Celebrity Basketball Tournament wore uniforms designed and donated by Wisin & Yandel’s recently launched urban clothing line “Los Lideres by Marc Ecko.”
