RZA (Wu Tang Clan) Talks Kung Fu and Inspiration Behind “The Man with the Iron Fists”
On Friday, October 26 RZA the writer, producer, director, and starring actor of Universal Pictures’ “The Man with the Iron Fists” held a press conference at the Museum of Martial Arts in Burbank, CA in support of the release of the new action-packed film.
RZA began by sharing the story of the first time he visited the museum with his family and how the art of Kung Fu has always inspired his work. “This project has been underway for over seven years”, he explained. Eli Roth helped RZA finalize the script for “The Man with the Iron Fists,” where they infused RZA’s musical talent as featured on the soundtrack.
During the gathering, RZA mentioned that he was present during the production of some of Quentin Tarantino’s films, such as Kill Bill, observing and learning from behind the scenes. Once he got to play the director’s role, it was Quentin’s turn to stand by the sidelines, observe and continue mentoring him along the process. Tarantino gave him the “Godfather blessing” when he told him, “the student has become the master.”
RZA has been inspired by the Kung Fu culture since he was a child and this passion has transcended into his career both musically and now cinematically. His love for martial arts extends from the physical practice and also lives mentally within him. Kung Fu was portrayed in the film very mindfully and carefully playing homage to the art that is sure to please all martial art fanatics. "The Man with the Iron Fists is a wonderful tribute to the classic Kung Fu films of the 1970s” mentioned Michael Gonzalez-Matsuda, owner of the Martial Arts Museum in Burbank.
During the press day, Kung Fu professionals and experts from Ken Carr’s Kaizen Karate Do & Kobudo gave daring martial arts demonstrations. Brick braking, sword sequences and blindfolded cucumber cutting tricks were some of the many performed.
Art Camacho, who is well known for his fighting choreography and stunt performances in the entertainment industry and referred to as “the master of on-air fighting sequences,” gave detailed tours of the museum and shared his knowledge on the art. He describes the film as "a fast-paced roller-coaster ride of Kung-Fu action."
