D’Nash: From Spain With Love
From Spain, the new singing sensation band D’Nash lands in America to make their romantic impact in the Latin music charts. The trio, formerly a four member boy band, claimed their international fame in Europe when they were chosen by the Spanish audience in the TVE reality competition show “Mision Eurovision” to represent their country at the biggest singing showcase in Europe, Eurovision. Now, Basty, Mikel and Javi have come to the US to show us how to sing to love in Spanish with their new album, “Garabatos”.
How did you guys meet?
Basty: We met in Madrid when we were studying musical theater. We had a lot in common like our passion for music. Soon after, we began singing covers together and a year later, we got a record deal. Our first album, Capaz de todo, debuted in 2006.
How did you guys come up with the name?
Basty: We did not want the name to define us, we wanted to define the name, so each of us suggested a letter that had a deep meaning and we ended up with D’ Nash.
What motivated you to participate in Eurovision?
Mikel: Our record company asked us to compete in “Mision Eurovision” and we did... and we won. The group saw it as a way to get international notoriety. Eurovision is a big deal in Europe, so we knew it was going to be positive for our career.
Why wait until the release of Garabatos to come to US?
Basty: This is our third album, but our first album with only three members. We’ve composed 8 of the 15 tracks. We needed to get rid of the boy band choreographies and concentrate on the music. I think that with this album, we’ve reached a level of maturity that will appeal to the US audience.
Do all of you write music?
Mikel: We do, although we only write melodies and lyrics and we do it together.
How is that?
Mikel: I know. It sounds crazy. For this album, we spent months in a beach house in Cadiz, Spain and as a group, each one of us came up with an idea for the theme of a song and we took it from there. It is a very democratic process, the majority rules when it comes to the creative writing. It is a very peculiar way of writing a song, but it works for us.
Do you play any instruments?
Javi: We are learning now how to play guitar and keyboard. We want to play live in our shows, but to be honest with you, I am doing it because it gives us credibility as musicians and the music industry will take us seriously.
How do you describe this album?
Mikel: It is a very personal album, not only because we composed many of the songs, but because we were involved in the entire process including production, arrangements and even art design.
How has the group dynamic changed from being four members to now being three?
Javi: Not much. Now, there are no ties when it comes to make a decision. Vocally, it’s almost the same. What is easier is to compose together.
Who are your musical influences?
Mikel: Alejandro Sanz, Luis Fonsi... When we were in Mexico, we were compared a lot to Camila and Reik and it was an honor. They are very popular and successful in Latin America and we want to achieve that. I would love to have a record featuring Luis Fonsi.
These three heartthrobs are not only good looking and talented, but very interesting people. Here are some D’Nash fun facts:
