With an established career as a standup comedian and success that continues to escalate, Gabriel Iglesias is still full of surprises. With sold out shows across the globe, people still want more of Fluffy. I got to sit down with the comedian, talk about his life, his career, and his newest project The Fluffy Movie.

‘Uniting the world through laughter’, the film’s tag line says it all, “New material, non-stop laughs”. The film premiere will make Iglesias the first latino to have a theatrical comedy release nationally.

Not only is the film all new content, but it’s an all family experience. Iglesias says, “It’s PG 13… The only f-word is fluffy in this movie. That’s all you gotta worry about…. It’s something people can feel comfortable taking their kids or their parents to go see… It’s an actual stand-up comedy concert… Everybody can go together, it’s the biggest thing about it and it is funny.”

Based on some recent screenings Gabriel assures, “Everyone laughs at the same points the way they would at a live concert… Everybody is still engaged very much with the movie. The actual cool part is that every seat in the theater is like a front row because it’s so big. Usuallly at the live concerts I’m like this big [mimicking a small version of himself] when people are sitting up in the nosebleeds and they gotta rely on the jumbotron’s that are not even that big. But in the movie theater it’s all like right there. All the screenings have gone over well. Everybody seems really happy with it.

With ongoing success also comes the pressure. Having performed in all fifty states and over 23 countries, for Iglesias as a latino it’s more than just a dream come true. He tells us that being the first latino releasing a theatrical comedy involves a lot of pressure from the media “because it is a huge deal”. He adds, “Like when George Lopez had his sitcom, I think that if he wouldn’t had the success he would’ve had with that show, there wouldn’t have been more opportunities presented to you know, other people. He opened up a lot of doors… when he opened up doors, some people walked through them and because of that there’s people like myself.” Gabriel, who also produced the film adds, “So I think it’s very important for this film to do well so that Hollywood can see, you know ‘hey, alright, okay, yea there is some out there, maybe we should take a chance on another one.’”

The comedian has no secrets. He said, “no questions are off limits, you guys can ask me anything everything,” and so we did! He was raised by a single mother and growing up was not glamorous. In fact, he emphasizes on the importance of knowing where he came from. “A lot of times you gotta work even harder to break that, because it’s like, are you kidding me? A kid from a bad neighborhood in the city, single parent. I’m not the greatest looking person in the world but I’m not chupacabra either. But I mean I was a chubby kid, acne, you know. I don’t fit the Hollywood mold. For somebody in my position to just stick to it and stick to it ‘cause a lot people tried to talk me out of it and this was a dream since I was ten years old.”

The Fluffy Movie tells the story of his life as a stage comedy act, including his weight loss issues and a lot more, which you can only see in theaters. “I wanted to make sure that when people left there, I wasn’t just some guy who makes noises and makes silly faces. That I’m a regular person… I’m a person who’s flawed. I have health issues, I have social issues, [joking] I have mental issues. I’m just fortunate that I have a platform that is very big to express what’s going on with me.”

The Fluffy Movie is in theaters on July 25th.
